RENO, Nev. – The University of Hawai'i Warrior football team not only suffered a devastating loss to quarterback Bryant Moniz but ultimately a key Western Athletic Conference game to Nevada, 42-28, Saturday, in a nationally televised game at Mackay Stadium.

Moniz, the WAC preseason player of the year, went down with an ankle injury late in the first quarter with the Warriors (5-5, 3-3 WAC) leading 3-0. Shane Austin finished the game and threw for 232 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Jeremiah Ostrowski ended up with a career-high 119 yards on eight catches.

Nevada quarterback Cody Fajardo passed for 290 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 81 yards and another score in leading the Wolf Pack (6-3, 4-0) to their fifth straight victory. Two of those touchdown passes went to Rishard Matthews, who finished with eight catches for 118 yards.

The loss of Moniz is the latest in a long list of injuries to the Warrior offense in recent weeks. Just last week, wide receiver Justin Clapp and left tackle Clayton Laurel suffered season-ending injuries while Royce Pollard missed Saturday's game snapping a string of 23 consecutive starts.

The Warriors got on the scoreboard first on their opening possession but settled for a 35-yard field goal by Kenton Chun. After the Moniz injury, the Wolf Pack put together a pair of touchdown drives finishing with touchdowns by Mark and a Fajardo to Matthews hook up.

After Austin led the Warriors downfield to a 38-yard field goal by Tyler Hadden, John Hardy-Tuliau blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone. Austin found Billy Ray Stutzmann for the 2-point conversion tying the game at 14.

With less than a minute and a half remaining, Fajardo led the Wolf Pack on a six-play, 64-yard drive, culminating in Matthews second touchdown reception giving the Pack a 21-14 lead at halftime.

The momentum shifted to the UH sideline to start the second half as Kawika Ornellas recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff. With the Warriors ready to potentially tie the score, running back Joey Iosefa fumbled at the goal line. The Wolf Pack made UH pay and Fajardo scrambled 25 yards for a 28-14 lead.

Following a long kickoff return by Mike Edwards, Austin led the Warriors downfield capped by a 3-yard touchdown run by Iosefa. The Warriors got the ball back but after a three-and-out, the Wolf Pack capitalized and marched for another touchdown, this time a Fajardo to Shane Anderson combination and a 35-21 lead.

The Warriors wouldn't quit, converting a huge fourth down in Nevada territory and pulling within one score when Austin found Jeremiah Ostrowski for a 26-yard score.

But the Wolf Pack put the game away with a fake field goal from Mason Magleby to Kolbe Aredse for a 42-28 lead.

The Warriors will return to Honolulu to host the final three games of the regular season beginning with their WAC-finale against Fresno State, Saturday, Nov. 19.
